I emphasize, daily, that reading without comprehension is not the goal we are working towards. Many of the books we read require the kiddos to dig back through the book for the response. I can tell you it is not one of their favorite things. But, as adults, think of how often we need to revisit a text to get the information we need.
When you read with your student, at home, talk about the story elements. Who are the characters? What is the setting? What are the important events of the story? Here's a fun video to watch with your child to emphasize story elements:
Here's an at-home challenge: After reading a story, have your child draw a picture about the story and list the characters, setting and 2 important detail. Have them bring it in to share during morning meeting.
